Phulkari or "flower work" is a rural tradition from the Punjab region of India. It dates back centuries. During the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 Phulkari work almost disappeared completely. This piece is from the end of the 19th Century.

Its deep, rich colors make it sophisticated and unusual. Phulkaris of bright yellow, gold and orange were more typical. This Phulkari is embroidered with silk on hand-woven cotton. It was made as a shawl to be worn on special occasions. Very good condition.
