Early 19th Century jewel-toned embroidered textile. While the motifs and design are familiar styles of Crete, the island shared influences with Epirus. Both experienced early Venetian and Ottoman occupations from which there comes design inspiration.
The embroidery combines traditional herringbone and feather stitches in silk to create a central motif densely surrounded by vases, flowers and double-headed birds which retain their original bright coloration.
A beautiful border on all four sides is trimmed in gold wrapped thread. In very good age appropriate condition with slight darkening of the ground and some pale surface spots. A few small holes. Rare.
